Kate is the newest Marketing Intern at I Love Travel. She sat down with me to discuss her experience so far with the I Love Travel Internship Program, and share some of her tips to get more "likes" on social media.
What are you studying in school?
I’m currently in my third year at Western University studying Media, Information & Technoculture (M.I.T). My studies focus on modern communication and information technologies, and how they influence your life in ways that you may not even recognize.
Why did you apply to be a Social Media & Marketing intern at I Love Travel?
I applied for this internship on a whim! It popped up when I was job hunting one day and when I read the description I knew I would be a good candidate. I’ve had previous experience with social media marketing and I love being creative so I felt that this was a really good fit. I also love to travel and I’ve had experience with the company by going on a few trips with the I Love Travel team (Breakaway and S-Trip!) and I loved the experiences so I just went for it.
What have you learned from this internship?
This internship has definitely helped me become more organized and self-regulated. By using company software it's helped me manage my time and execute certain projects more efficiently. I’ve also learned to just go all out and be as creative as possible and have fun with it at the same time!
What advice would you give to new Social Media & Marketing interns?
I would just tell new interns to be as confident as you can, ask a lot of questions, just go for it and have fun! You’re working with a really amazing team and you can learn a lot from them if you put yourself out there and take as much from the experience as you can.
Describe the office and team at I Love Travel.
The office is very welcoming, bright, and happy. Everyone really enjoys their time here, you can tell. They are always smiling and it's apparent they love what they do. The marketing team, who I've been working closely with is just amazing! They give you real responsibilities and don't just treat you like you're an intern, or outside of the team. I love how everyone can get together and work as a team to finish projects together.
What does your daily routine consist of?
I start off my morning by checking my daily tasks. I'm on our social media accounts all day everyday. I monitor what’s going on and who’s using our hashtags. I also write a lot of blog posts for I Love Travel and I work with the marketing team to help with any other tasks they need me too. These normally include executing an Ad Campaign for the Online Store, managing the S-Trip! photo contest, or plugging in social media analytics! I’m there to help with anything.
What are your goals after graduation?
My goals are to work in the media industry in some sort of creative or public relations position with a fun and innovative company! That's all I know so far!
What’s the secret to getting a lot of “likes” on photos?
Post an epic, good quality picture with a witty caption and use appropriate and popular hashtags. That should do the trick!
What is your FAVORITE part about Snapchat?
I love how it's live and the footage is raw! It’s really fun to see the snaps from on destination throughout my internship. Everyone is always having so much fun and It’s really neat to see the S-Trip! product in real time.
What advice would you give to people who want to win an S-Trip! Photo Contest?
Take unique photos that are different than the cliche on destination photos. Do something crazy like a wild pose, or a funny face. Get all your friends involved and be creative.
What are 3 tips you would give to people who want to become “InstaFamous”?
Be yourself and be as creative and original as possible! Be funny or witty with your captions because people are into that.
Who are your FAVORITE people to follow online?
I’ve always loved Lauren Conrad so she’s definitely my favorite. She has so many things going on with fashion, blogging, and working with charitable organizations. I just love her lifestyle and I want to be just like her one day. I also like following lifestyle accounts. There's one called @chique_le_frique which re-posts a lot of cool things, and places, art and clothes. It’s just a really pretty account.
